New American Dream

Dear Editor,

I moved to Texas chasing the promises of cheaper housing options compared to those available in the East Coast suburbs I was leaving. Yet even in the Lone Star State, homeownership – and even affordable rent, for many of my contemporaries – still remains far out of reach.

James Talarico has fought – and will continue to fight in the United States Senate – to change that.

The tenets of what he calls his “New American Dream” economic agenda include policies aimed at lowering barriers for first-time homebuyers and making it easier to build smaller and cheaper places to live.

And it’s not just talk. James already has a proven record in the Texas House of authoring, sponsoring, and passing state legislation to create more affordable options for homeowners and renters alike. By championing single-stair apartment construction, affordable housing tax credits, and property tax exemptions for nonprofit developers, he has helped lay the groundwork for making housing more attainable for Texans like me.

James fights for what Texans – whether lifelong residents, or newcomers like me in search of opportunity – have a right to expect: “to be able to live a good life we can afford.” And he’s right to understand that that starts at home, literally. Whether renting an apartment or buying a house, Texans stand to benefit from a leader whose platform is built on that understanding.

At the last NO KINGS rally before the election, many protesters carried homemade signs to express how they feel. Taken as a whole, they tell us what concerns these Americans most. They read:
