The Houston City Council Found a Novel Way to Silence Protests on Live Stream
It’s been more than two weeks since Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Houston resident and Mexican citizen, was shot and killed by a federal agent while on his way to work. In the initial aftermath of the shooting, the city’s mayor, John Whitmire, pleaded powerlessness in response to cries from constituents to have the Houston Police Department investigate Salgado’s death, claiming the city lacked jurisdiction. At a city council meeting on July 8, the day after Salgado was killed, he expressed his frustration with the fact that Houston would be forced to wade into the matter. “As I’ve said two years ago, I wish it was something that we just didn’t have to deal with,” referring to immigration enforcement as a whole.
