Elsa Hull spends a lot of time in the San Ygnacio Bird and Butterfly Sanctuary, a small county park that abuts the Rio Grande about 35 miles south of Laredo. The park is nothing special—a two-acre patch of scrub, dirt, and trees: mesquite, cedar, hackberry, and retama.
