Our New Crossword Constructor on Making a Great Texas-Themed Puzzle

Last September, Texas Monthly debuted a new monthly column in the magazine: a Texas-themed crossword puzzle.The puzzle constructor who devises these for us is Brandon Koppy, a resident of Dripping Springs and an experienced puzzle maker who is also a frequent contributor to The New York Times.This week on TM Out Loud, Koppy speaks with his editor, Texas Monthly copy chief Marilyn Bailey, about what it takes to make a great Texas crossword. They’ll also dive into the Texas Monthly archives to examine a crossword we published in 1997, and without giving too much away, they’ll unpack the quote-based puzzle in the January 2026 issue of the magazine.
