My grandfather, uncle, and dad co-owned and operated an ice plant in Uvalde throughout my childhood. While local farmers would rejoice after a summer rain because their crops would thrive, we’d rejoice because it meant the Frio River would run, bringing tubers who’d need to stock their coolers.Most people don’t think much about the bags filling the freezers outside their local convenience store, but ice put a roof over our heads and covered our Rexall soda fountain bill each month.
