Transportant launches school bus stop arm camera to tag drivers who blow past students

DATE POSTED:January 14, 2026

The latest technology from a Kansas-based leader in school bus safety captures the license plates of law-breakers via full-color digital imaging that can be used to alert law enforcement officials who can then issue citations and hold drivers in violation accountable.

The product launch from Transportant comes during a time of expansion for the Lenexa company, which now sees its school bus safety tech used on 2,500 school buses in 80 districts and 19 states. It closed a $1.1 million oversubscribed Series A funding round in September 2025.

ICYMI: Transportant picked a lane; now the Lenexa bus tech startup wants to conquer even more of the road

The company piloted the new stop arm camera with the local Platte County School District, which recently upgraded its Transportant technology to its school buses. Kansas area schools are early adopters of school bus technology, given their proximity to Transportant.

“Being in Kansas, an epicenter of smart city and health and safety technology, we’re constantly inspired to push our technology further,” said Martin Staples, CEO of Transportant. “We are purpose-driven — we innovate because we know our technology saves lives. It’s a mission this community supports.”

Currently, 31 districts in Kansas and Missouri have incorporated the technology onto their buses, most recently Guadalupe Centers and the Eudora and Beloit school districts.

Transportant technology replaces legacy low-tech transportation practices, like analog cameras with video tape and paper instructions, routes, and student rosters for drivers.

School safety is increasingly in the news, Staples noted, spurring districts to continue to invest in their safety programs, now on their buses.

“The latest in technology can now detect unwanted items on the buses — like guns, suspicious packages, and intruders, and see behaviors that are warning signs for escalating incidents, which can now be prevented.”
