WeCode KC touts new grant funding aimed at boosting regional workforce readiness

A just-announced $50,000 grant is expected to help a homegrown workforce development program better prepare 18- to 26-year-old Kansas Citians for careers in high-demand technology fields, said Tammy Buckner, noting a ripple effect expected for the region.

Kansas City-built WeCode KC has been selected as a 2025 grant recipient by the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation through its Board Discretionary Fund, supporting regional priorities outlined in its “Restoring America’s Promise” roadmap for the Kansas City metro.

The Prospect Business Association and Cornerstones of Care (for Build Trybe) also received $50,000 grants alongside WeCode KC in the workforce preparation vertical as part of the Board of Directors Discretionary Fund grants.

WeCode KC provides hands-on technical training, industry-recognized certification preparation, and professional development designed to support successful transitions into the workforce.

“WeCode KC is committed to creating access to opportunity through technology and workforce development,” said Buckner, founder of WeCode KC. “This support strengthens our ability to prepare young adults for sustainable careers while contributing to long-term economic mobility across the Kansas City region.”

Participants in WeCode KC programming gain practical experience in such areas as coding and cybersecurity while also building essential workplace skills, confidence, and career readiness. The workforce program emphasizes real-world application and clear pathways to employment, equipping young adults to succeed in today’s rapidly evolving, tech-driven economy. 

The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is recognized as a Mission Control–level sponsor, supporting WeCode KC’s mission to expand access to high-quality workforce training and open doors to economic opportunity for the next generation.
