Weekend Wine: Luigi Bosca’s Insignia Malbec

DATE POSTED:August 28, 2026

If you are intending to do some grilling this coming Labor Day, I have an ideal wine – one that will go with anything from a juicy hamburger to a sublime ribeye.

Luigi Bosca is one of the great old wineries of Argentina, founded in 1901. It is widely distributed in Texas, so it is fairly easy to find. They produce several very good red wines, but the one I am recommending is their entry level Insignia Malbec ($20).

They make four levels of Malbec, and luckily, the Insignia is their least expensive version. It is luxurious enough that you may never need to move up to their pricier versions.

Bosca’s Insignia Malbec is the perfect wine for a grilled red meat. You can expect a powerful red with lots of fruit, but also enough palate-cleansing acidity to work well at a picnic. Add a salad with a fresh tomato and a good sprinkling of arugula to give some bitterness to balance the fruitiness of the wine.

Serve it just slightly chilled, especially if you’ll be drinking it outside. If you have a thermometer handy, 60 degrees is a good target, but if you are less temperature-crazed than me, just make sure the bottle feels cool, not cold, and really try to avoid room temperature. It is worth the effort. Just that little bit of care will deliver a great red wine for your Labor Day, or any other day.
