Billy Bob Thornton and Luke Wilson’s Texan Advertising War Means More Than You Think
If you’ve been watching football on television the past few months, you’ve almost certainly caught the dueling advertisements between Dallas-based AT&T and Bellevue, Washington–based T-Mobile, starring Luke Wilson and Billy Bob Thornton, respectively. Each uses similar aesthetics: A famous leading man addresses the camera, heaps praise on the phone company that hired him, and warns the viewer not to trust any other ones. Each actor does this in folksy language, standing before a landscape that suggests West Texas (though they may actually be in Arizona or New Mexico, or even, gasp, California). To create the appearance of authenticity and trustworthiness, both companies are relying on actors with distinct Texan personas.
