Texas public universities are in crisis. For years, campuses have been roiled by fights over Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives, censorship, and pro-Palestine protests. Professors across the state have been disciplined or fired for teaching banned subjects. In January, Texas A&M warned philosophy professor Martin Peterson to remove a reading from Plato’s Symposium from his syllabus because it violated a university ban on gender ideology. “It’s Soviet-style education,” Peterson said. Earlier this month, Governor Greg Abbott thrust former University of Texas at Austin quarterback Colt McCoy into this maelstrom by appointing him to a six-year term on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which oversees the state’s public university systems.
