It was, as ever, a fine night to be a young man: a lazy July evening, one of those days when the Central Texas sky refuses to relinquish the sun and the heat must be addressed by an ice-cold American beer. At the Railhouse in Kyle, a wood-paneled saloon so full of TVs that no sight line is left behind, groups had gathered for the first NFL preseason game of the year. In the main hall, country pop backdropped jovial games of shuffleboard and pool. Behind the exposed-brick bar, kegs were kicked and new ones tapped, the ticktock of the encroaching weekend.
