During the third season of the hit HBO series The White Lotus, which will have a blowout season finale on Sunday, there’s been a great hullabaloo over the authenticity of Parker Posey’s Southern accent in her portrayal of North Carolina matriarch Victoria Ratliff. Some believe it’s put-on, over-the-top; others have defended the Mississippian, saying that some Southerners really do speak that way—especially the rich, pill-popping ones.
