On a recent May morning, when I opened the front door of Huítzitzilin Cafe, a coffee shop in my Dallas neighborhood of Oak Cliff, I let out an exuberant “Yes!” I took in the vibrant, homey space, decorated with costumed plushies, folkloric mannequins, and art made by children from area schools, and felt a certain warmth envelop me. As I sat with a friend and drank an arroz con leche latte, I was soothed by a soundtrack of Mexican musicians, among them electropop trio Belanova and folk songstress Natalia Lafourcade.It was exactly what I’d been missing from contemporary coffee shops, with their sterile, industrial designs made to turn over large volumes of customers instead of encouraging people to sit awhile and engage with their communities.…The post Latino Coffee Shops Are Everything I’ve Been Missing From Modern Cafes appeared first on Texas Monthly.
