The State’s Best Tour Guides Want to Show You Around.” You could probably hire a river guide who knows more about the Rio Grande’s geology and hydrology, but only Butch Hancock can lead a group of canoers into Santa Elena Canyon at Big Bend National Park while sending a song like “If You Were a Bluebird” echoing through the gorge. Fans of the 79-year-old Lubbock-born musician might be surprised to learn that he’s been a guide for decades, so deep is his association with his longtime band, the Flatlanders. Much like his neighbors in his remote home of Terlingua, Hancock is not much interested in television shows, cellphone apps, or the internet.
