Butch Hancock is one of the guides profiled in “Meet the Texperts! The State’s Best Tour Guides Want to Show You Around.” You could probably hire a river guide who knows more about the Rio Grande’s geology and hydrology, but only Butch Hancock can lead a group of canoers into Santa Elena Canyon at Big Bend National Park while sending a song like “If You Were a Bluebird” echoing through the gorge. Fans of the 79-year-old Lubbock-born musician might be surprised to learn that he’s been a guide for decades, so deep is his association with his longtime band, the Flatlanders.
