While hundreds of Texans gathered in November to celebrate the much-anticipated reopening of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site after a two-year, $54 million renovation, Amanda Cagle was closely examining the seams of centuries-old clothing at the on-site Star of the Republic Museum. Could visitors see the tiny holes in the pleats where a dress had been let out? Would they notice the threadbare imprint of a man’s pocket watch in his striped-silk waistcoat?“Every dress is like a fingerprint,” says Cagle, who oversees about 10,000 objects, mostly from the 1830s and 1840s, at the museum, which is operated by the Texas Historical Commission.
