I saw Nolan Ryan pitch in the summer of 1989. Months earlier, after spending 22 seasons with the New York Mets, the California Angels, and the Houston Astros, he had signed with the Texas Rangers for a whopping (at the time) $1.8 million base salary. Although Ryan was 42 years old, retirement age for most pitchers, he was still throwing 100-mile-per-hour fastballs and showed no sign of slowing down.I had gotten tickets close to the third base line.
