On a moonless night last November, four soldiers climbed into the back of a mud-caked armored personnel carrier in southern Ukraine. The band of foreign volunteers—two Americans, a Chilean, and an Australian—was bound for the village of Stepnohirsk, the last defensive stronghold against Russian forces that were advancing toward the industrial city of Zaporizhzhia, roughly twenty miles to the north. Inside the cramped vehicle the helmeted men crouched side by side, wearing tan camo and body armor, ammunition strapped to their chests. The Australian, a sniper and combat veteran who goes by Bane, snapped a selfie.
