Gwen Welk Workman has sold Swedish candy for the past twenty years at her store called the Wooden Spoon, in Plano. In doing so, she’s helped the local Scandinavian community (yes, there is one, thanks to Swedish companies such as Assa Abloy Global Solutions and Ericsson having outposts nearby) continue the cultural tradition of eating “Saturday candy,” a practice linked to a 1950s dental-health recommendation to indulge in sweets only once per week.
