As I drove east on Texas Highway 35 through flat green farmland, white plastic bags waved in surrender from wire fences, and a lone palm tree emerged on the horizon. I wished godspeed to a turtle at the edge of the road and rolled down my window, allowing the thick, salty air to whip my hair across my face. I was getting close to the beach.
