Milam, who is 49, presides over the San Vicente Independent School District, located in Big Bend National Park.I grew up in Knippa, outside Uvalde. “Go ahead and blink, Knippa’s bigger than you think” was our slogan—but it’s a one-stoplight town. Out of school I worked in probation and parole, but I decided I needed a change and gave teaching a try. I got certified and landed a job in Port Arthur at a school where a college friend was principal. I worked in Houston, then Uvalde, and then at a small school in Utopia, before getting married and taking the job as superintendent out here in Big Bend.
